Try Not to Breathe – Holly Seddon

Psychological suspense novel which sees Alex investigate the abduction and beating of 15 year old Amy 15 years ago.
Amy has been in a persistent vegetative state for the last 15 years and Alex is a journalist trying to resurrect her career by covering the conditions of patients in similar circumstances when she comes across Amy. Alex is fighting her own demons of alcoholism and a failed marriage but she is determined to find justice for Amy.
A compelling story that will move readers and have them willing Alex to get the justice that Amy deserves, it uncovers family backgrounds that while loving on the surface had darker undercurrents. It’s thought provoking in terms of the characters lives, we feel horror, revulsion but also empathy for Amy, Alex and Amy’s boyfriend of the time – Jacob – who is so consumed with his own guilt that he runs the risk of breaking up his own marriage.
I really felt like I connected with Amy and Alex especially – I had a real empathy for both of them and what circumstances led them to where they are now – Jacobs wife, Fiona, irritated me immensely and I found myself wishing that she would just leave and be done with it! The plot threw a few red herrings along the way and although I had guessed the end it didn’t detract from my enjoyment of the book.
Excellent debut novel from Holly Seddon and thank you to Netgalley and Random House for an ARC
