Viral – Helen Fitzgerald

Well the opening line was quite a hook! What if one of the biggest mistakes that you have made in your life is caught on video and goes viral? With the reach of social media these days viral videos are something that we have all seen at one time or another – but what of the impact on the lives of those involved – the star, the onlookers, the family and even the participants themselves? Viral is a book about a moral issue – a girl under the influence of alcohol and drugs, unable to make an informed choice or give consent is filmed doing something that she would never have done – this book makes the reader think – what would they have done in each of the characters shoes – would you have stood by and watched? Intervened? Encouraged? Shared? Ignored? Sought revenge? It makes for uncomfortable reading and fills you with horror if your teenagers are just booking their first holiday abroad – but it raises issues of morality, consent and revenge which are all too prominent in these days where we live our lives through social media Thanks to Netgalley and Faber & Faber for an ARC in return for an honest review. 4 stars from me
