The Woman Before Me, Ruth Dugdall. Five stars from me!

This book blew me away! Having read Humber Boy I was keen to go back and read the beginning of Probation Officer, Cate Austin’s story.

The Woman Before Me is a dark psychological thriller that will have you frantically turning the pages to find out what happens next. Rosie Wilks is up for parole after serving four years for the manslaughter of baby Luke and Cate is tasked with writing her report and influencing the board’s decision.

The story is told between the present and Rosie’s past in the form of her diary. Disturbing, chilling and compelling this book ticks every box for a psychological thriller. Rosie is a dark character whom you feel sorry for but also recoil from at the same time; baby Luke’s mother, Emma and Rosie’s partner Jason are also characters that you will find hard to warm to, but this is what makes the book so compelling to read. I’d highly recommend it to fans of dark psychological thrillers exploring the dark side of human nature and relationships. Well deserved five stars from me!
