Behind Her Eyes – Sarah Pinborough

28965131What the blurb says:

Why is everyone talking about the ending of Sarah Pinborough’s Behind Her Eyes?

Louise is a single mom, a secretary, stuck in a modern-day rut. On a rare night out, she meets a man in a bar and sparks fly. Though he leaves after they kiss, she’s thrilled she finally connected with someone.

When Louise arrives at work on Monday, she meets her new boss, David. The man from the bar. The very married man from the bar…who says the kiss was a terrible mistake, but who still can’t keep his eyes off Louise.

And then Louise bumps into Adele, who’s new to town and in need of a friend. But she also just happens to be married to David. And if you think you know where this story is going, think again, because Behind Her Eyes is like no other book you’ve read before.

David and Adele look like the picture-perfect husband and wife. But then why is David so controlling? And why is Adele so scared of him?

As Louise is drawn into David and Adele’s orbit, she uncovers more puzzling questions than answers. The only thing that is crystal clear is that something in this marriage is very, very wrong. But Louise can’t guess how wrong―and how far a person might go to protect their marriage’s secrets.

In Behind Her Eyes, Sarah Pinborough has written a novel that takes the modern day love triangle and not only turns it on its head, but completely reinvents it in a way that will leave readers reeling.

My review: 5/5

A common theme here is the difficulty had in reviewing this book without giving away any spoilers! This is probably the hardest review I’ve written because there are so many #OMFG things I want to shout about this book but I can’t! So I will do my very best to give it the 5 star review it deserves without spoiling the enjoyment of those still to read!

Louise is blown away by a kiss from David,  a #ManInTheBar one night, only to discover not only is he married but he is also her new boss! She is mortified the following week when he comes into the office to meet the partners and brings his stunningly gorgeous wife, Adele, with him – so embarrassed that she runs to the toilet to hide from them both! The next day when David turns up at work he is equally shocked to discover Louise but it is obvious there is a connection between them and they are drawn to each other like moths to a flame. Louise then bumps into Adele and soon they two have forged a friendship which has Louise in knots for her betrayal but also for the very different picture she is building of David in her head.

Ahhh so I hear you say – a classic love triangle – what’s so thrilling about that! But what happens from then on in is sooooo compelling and mind blowingly twisted that you will be wound up tighter than a corkscrew; you won’t be able to put this book down and you are going to have to read and re read just to keep up with where the ride is taking you – and what a ride!

As a reader you are given just enough information to hook you in, the characters are so well drawn and plausible that you really won’t know who or what to believe; you are the observer manipulated with every turn of the page and you will not be able to resist the lure of the plot. Don’t rush through it to get to the ending though – savour every moment, every sick twist, every deception and every manipulation that you will experience.

It’s no spoiler that the ending is one hell of a twist and if ever a book deserved the hashtag #WTFThatEnding – then #BehindHerEyes is it! This is going to be one of the top thrillers of 2017
