As a relative Mel Sherratt #newbie (having binged on the Estate series and Watching Over You towards the end of last year) I was #SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEKING with excitement when Noelle at #Bookouture asked me to be a part of the Blog Tour for #DontLookBehindYou – the 2nd in the Detective Eden Berrisford series! Emmmmmm let me think I said…yeah right… I so did… NOT! This was a #HellYeah response!
There is just something about Mel’s books that have grabbed me since I picked them up late last year (I’ve no idea why it took me so long to join this party!) But hey I’m through the door and you are going to have to be getting a very heavy bouncer to chuck me out now!
Enough of my blethering though – let’s get on with the review!
What the blurb says:
She got into bed but sleep didn’t come easily. Every creak in the house made her alert. She was waiting for him to come and get her.
The small city of Stockleigh is in shock as three women are brutally attacked within days of each other. Are they random acts of violence or is there a link between the victims? For Detective Eden Berrisford, it’s her most chilling case yet.
The investigation leads Eden to cross paths with Carla, a woman trying to rebuild her life after her marriage to a cruel and abusive man ended in unimaginable tragedy. Her husband Ryan was imprisoned for his crimes but, now he’s out and coming for her.
As Eden starts to close in on the attacker, she also puts herself in grave danger. Can she stop him before he strikes again? And can Carla, terrified for her life, save herself – before the past wreaks a terrible revenge?
My review: 5/5
When several women are attacked in her home town, Detective Eden Berrisford, is determined to bring the attacker to justice but with no apparent motive and unsure of any provable link between the attacks then this is proving to be one of the most difficult and harrowing cases she has worked on. At the same time over in the Women’s Refuge, Carla the women’s counsellor has a feeling she is being watched and when Tanya turns back up at the refuge after another beating from her long-term partner things start to take a sinister turn. The twists and turns in this book will conspire to put the fear of God into you especially if you are reading it late at night on your own!
It’s a fast paced read which, despite the harrowing subject matter, has an energy which just swoops you up and drags you along with it until it spits you out at the other end as a pile of emotional mush!
Eden Berrisford is a strong ball-breaker of a character – she takes no prisoners in her approach and I bloody well love her for it! Don’t Look Behind You shows us a bit more of Eden’s character and we can see the layers exposed as we get to know her more. There is a vulnerability there that she likes to keep hidden but what has been happening in her personal life is sure to see that exposed so very soon! Another reason to keep reading this fantastic series!
Rape and domestic abuse are harrowing subject matters but once again Mel Sherratt explores them with both a sensitivity but at the same time a realism that doesn’t gloss over what life is like for those who have lived experience of these horrendous crimes – some may criticise the horror that is portrayed but if we are to tackle these issues then we cannot ever sugarcoat the stark reality that victims face.
Mel doesn’t write cosy crime fiction, her books pick you up and place you in the centre of the action; the streets and estates she writes of are found in every city across our towns; the characters are larger than life but real – we all know them in our own communities – some of whom have been dealt a shit deck of cards in life but somehow and from somewhere find the strength to carry on. Mel gives us grit, crime and horror but she wraps it up in a blanket of human warmth, strength and dignity and I’m always happy just to sink into one of her books and let it envelop me while I shut the world outside and welcome her stories and characters into my life!
Don’t just take my word for it! Why don’t you try some of her books for yourself!
