A sunny but breezy evening brought Helen Fields along to Waterstones in Edinburgh to launch her second novel, Perfect Prey.
I was delighted to catch up with my blogging buddy Kelly from #LoveBooksGroup blog.
Helen Fields then had the audience spellbound with a reading from “Perfect Prey” and let’s just say it promises to be another compelling read! She then led us through her journey from a law student, to barrister to published author and what a journey it has been! I loved the importance Helen placed on the telling of stories throughout our lives and certainly how her storytelling skills and flair for drama were a perfect fit for life as a barrister, where the courtroom becomes a forum for some of life’s most dramatic and tragic stories to be laid bare.
The audience heard that the decision to set the books in Scotland was based very much on Helen’s love of our country and the rich and dark history that lends itself to crime fiction. Also important is the famous Scottish gallows humour and our direct approach which quickly cuts down to size those in danger of being a wee bit too much in love with themselves and she felt this was important for Luc’s character!
Helen discussed her inspiration behind some characters, her desire to include topical and controversial subjects in her novels and the need for writers to up their game in every book to keep both the reader and themselves interested.
All too soon the event drew to a close but I am delighted to hear that Helen is also going to be attending Bloody Scotland this year – don’t miss her!
