I am absolutely buzzing to be on the #BlogTour for the latest standalone psychological thriller, #SilentVictim, from Caroline Mitchell. I’m a huge fan of Caroline’s work and it was an honour to take part in this tour.
Before I share my thoughts, here’s what the blurb says:
Emma’s darkest secrets are buried in the past. But the truth can’t stay hidden for long.
Emma is a loving wife, a devoted mother…and an involuntary killer. For years she’s been hiding the dead body of the teacher who seduced her as a teen.
It’s a secret that might have stayed buried if only her life had been less perfect. A promotion for Emma’s husband, Alex, means they can finally move to a bigger home with their young son. But with a buyer lined up for their old house, Emma can’t leave without destroying every last trace of her final revenge…
Returning to the shallow grave in the garden, she finds it empty. The body is gone.
Panicked, Emma confesses to her husband. But this is only the beginning. Soon, Alex will discover things about her he’ll wish he’d learned sooner. And others he’ll long to forget.
Well, I read this book in one sitting; as soon as I began I could not put it down! Silent Victim is narrated from alternate points of view, Emma, her husband, Alex and teacher Luke and it spans from past to present. Each chapter lets you know which character is narrating and what time period you are reading about so it is easy to keep abreast of where you are in the storyline.
The blurb tells you what you need to know about the plot, there is so much I want to say but my lips are well and truly sealed, no spoilers here! I will, however, tell you that Silent Victim is a breathtaking, screw with your mind and keep you up all night kind of read. It’s a psychological thriller at its very best!
A brilliantly executed plot with authentic and often chilling narration will have your head spinning. The pacing is perfect as each chapter feeds you just a little more. So see that “just one more chapter” ploy you use before you go to sleep, well you can forget it with this one! Who will you believe, any of them? None of them? Just what the hell has happened in Emma’s life to lead her to where she is now. It quickly becomes clear that murder is not all that is buried in Emma’s mind as the story unfolds.
Silent Victim explores the themes of grooming, abuse of power, eating disorders and mental health. I really could feel that descent into a world out of control as I read. Caroline Mitchell does this in a manner which manages to be both sensitive but also compelling and suspenseful; she really is the mistress of psychological thrillers, she knows just how to build up the tension, set the reader on edge, prepare to let them go, only to pull back and start the process all over again. My heart was in my mouth throughout this book!
Secrets and lies entwine their way through this storyline, twists that are tighter than a corkscrew and a plot that will leave you breathless, characters that will cause you angst and confusion as you try to work out just who should be trusted! When you pick up this book make sure you have set aside a day as you are not going to be able to put it down, you are not going to want to put it down!
