Rob Ashman - This Little Piggy_cover_high res.jpg

Rob Ashman is on FIRE right now! And I am delighted to be one of the bloggers kicking off the #BlogBlitz on publication day for his latest Roz Kray novel, “This Little Piggy”. Thank you to Sarah over at Bloodhound and to Rob for asking me and providing the ARC to review.

Check that cover out!!! Just a hint at how twisted this author is!

And it is publication day so let’s get this damn party started!

Before I share my thoughts here’s what the official blurb says:

Kevin Palmer is a regular sort of guy, or he was until his life fell apart. His wife, his money, his business and his reputation are all taken away from him. He tries to fight back and ends up in prison.

There he concocts elaborate fantasies to wreak vengeance. He is sent to work in an abattoir and the final piece of the jigsaw falls into place with chilling consequences. Then a cruel twist of fate changes everything.

DI Rosalind Kray is battling her own demons having returned to work following a brutal attack. She finds herself on the trail of a sick and twisted killer and cracks the macabre pattern of murders. But her boss is unconvinced.

Kray has Palmer squarely in her sights. But he has other ideas …

Can Kray break him in time to save the final victim?

Time is running out.

My thoughts

I’ll tell you something that Rob Ashman certainly knows how to write a killer hook! The way he opens a book is electrifying! So many questions surge through my head demanding answers which I guess you know means that I am hooked! And when he gives a book the title of “This Little Piggy” then you know that you are about to enter the twisted world that is Rob Ashman’s mind!

It’s the second in the series and while you can read it as a stand-alone I’d say that’s just plain crazy! You will be missing out on the first installment of what is set to be one of my top series of the year!

Roz Kray is back at work as acting DCI when she is called to the scene of  a crime; she is not in the best place as it is approaching the anniversary of her husband’s murder. Her day is just about to get worse! “This Little Piggy” follows a tale of twisted revenge and Kray’s race against time and her battle against her superiors. Will she find the killer before it’s too late!?

Rob’s narrative is so authentic that I am immediately transported to the pages of the book, I can see, hear, taste, touch and smell all that’s going on round me. And believe me when I say that with Rob’s books this can be a visceral experience!

A pill popping killer calmly sits down to breakfast after a particularly gruesome murder which will make you realise that you clearly don’t want to be getting on Rob Ashman’s bad side! Warped or what! And, if you are not considering becoming vegetarian after reading this…then I worry for your santity! The killer’s tale is told through a series of flashbacks and daily diary entries narrated from inside his head which is not the most pleasant of places to be! We discover what lead him to where he is now and let me tell you his guy is probably one of the most deranged characters I’ve read for a while. Seriously warped, outwardly normal everyday kind of guy but get inside his head in this book and it will chill you to the bone!

Rob Ashman might write gruesome twisted thrillers but they are more than that, it is not all about gruesome death!  A strong foundation of engaging characters and  compelling plotlines with superbly executed twists means that I always know I’m in for a cracking read when I pick up one of his books. Fast paced and snappy chapters match the pace of the plot keeping you ticking over at a steady rhythm with enough loop the loops to make you think you are on the Blackpool pleasure beach!

Roz is a complex but compelling character, her OCD, healthy disregard for bureacracy and political policing means she’s not always top of everyone’s Xmas card list but this woman is my heroine.  She has balls, guts and a mouth that expels before her brain engages – I bloody well love her! Following her attack at the hands of a serial killer in the last book, Kray’s paranoia is spiralling and while she manages to keep a lid on it at work, at home it is a different story.

Her relationship with her team is fascinating to watch, she never quite brings herself to fully trust and sometimes with reason. DI Brownlow is everything she despises, he is lazy, lacks insight and intellect and Kray revels in his discomfort every time she watches him dig himself deeper into a hole. Tavener is about the only one that she trusts in the team but a couple of new faces may provide a bit of a distraction and a threat for her. But, however her relationships go I don’t think that much will distract her from her job though. She’s determined and focused and nothing will stand in her way!

If you want crime that you can sit back and sip lashings and lashings of ginger beer with then move along now! But if you are looking for something raw and gritty and with some cleverly crafted twists and then some, then step right up and grab a pew! Nursery Rhymes will never be the same again!

Rob is married to Karen with two grown up daughters. He is originally from South Wales and after moving around with work settled in North Lincolnshire where he’s spent the last twenty-two years.

Like all good welsh valley boys Rob worked for the National Coal Board after leaving school at sixteen and went to University at the tender age of twenty-three when the pit closures began to bite. Since then he’s worked in a variety of manufacturing and consulting roles both in the UK and abroad.

It took Rob twenty-four years to write his first book. He only became serious about writing it when his dad got cancer. It was an aggressive illness and Rob gave up work for three months to look after him and his mum. Writing Those That Remain became his coping mechanism. After he wrote the book his family encouraged him to continue, so not being one for half measures, Rob got himself made redundant, went self-employed so he could devote more time to writing and four years later the Mechanic Trilogy is the result.

When he is not writing, Rob is a frustrated chef with a liking for beer and prosecco, and is known for occasional outbreaks of dancing.

Rob published the Mechanic Trilogy with Bloodhound Books in 2017 and will be releasing three new books during 2018. These are titled: Faceless, This Little Piggy and Suspended Retribution.
