So you know that way when you hear others go on about an author and you think to yourself, I really must add this to my TBR…yep I’ll bet you all know that feeling! Liz Nugent has been on my radar for a long time and I finally got round to reading “Lying in Wait” this week. Can I just tell you if she is an author you have been thinking of adding to your list, well what the hell are you waiting for! Read NOW! I bought this book earlier this year and this is me just getting round to reading it and I am only gutted I didn’t get to it sooner! Thankfully she has another two out there for me to indulge myself in!
Before I share my thoughts, here’s what the official blurb says:
My husband did not mean to kill Annie Doyle, but the lying tramp deserved it.
On the surface, Lydia Fitzsimons has the perfect life—wife of a respected, successful judge, mother to a beloved son, mistress of a beautiful house in Dublin. That beautiful house, however, holds a secret. And when Lydia’s son, Laurence, discovers its secret, wheels are set in motion that lead to an increasingly claustrophobic and devastatingly dark climax.
For fans of Ruth Ware and Gillian Flynn, this novel is a “seductively sinister story. The twists come together in a superbly scary denouncement, which delivers a final sting in the tail. Brilliantly macabre” (Sunday Mirror).
Where do I start? What do I even say? So much I want to say but I will not risk any spoilers for you! This is probably one of the best books I’ve read this year. A perfectly executed psychological twisted plot that kept me engrossed well past my bedtime!
This is not a traditional crime novel, although it does kick off with a murder. However, we know from the very beginning both who and why. Hmm… I hear you say? So what is the point in that? Well, dear reader, pick up this book and you will have presented to you a truly spectacular character-driven novel that will propel you straight into the lives of the most dysfunctional family you will ever meet! Told from the point of view of Lydia, Laurence and Karen your mind will go into meltdown with manipulation, lies, control, obsession and deceit all combining to provide you with a knockout read! The people you meet within these pages will claw their way under your skin and leave you tingling long after you turn the last pages. Let’s just say you are going to be glad that you don’t have a mother(or a wife) like Lydia and if you do then run for the hills!
The plot is deviously twisted and brilliantly engineered and believe me you are going to be reading with an open mouth all the way through.
Truly outstanding read and what sort of a brilliant mind comes up with a novel this dark! Liz Nugent you have found yourself a brand new fan!
