The Magpies is one of my favourite reads and I was looking forward to the final installment of this tale! Will Lucy Newton finally be found and will Kirsty and Jamie find the peace they crave? Thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the ARC for review.
Before I share my thoughts, here’s what the official blurb says:
The chilling conclusion to the #1 bestseller The Magpies.
Twelve months ago, Jamie Knight walked straight into Lucy Newton’s trap. Both Jamie and his ex-wife Kirsty barely survived. Now, with the police investigation into Lucy’s disappearance going nowhere, Jamie teams up with a true crime podcaster to track down his nemesis.
But can Jamie persuade Kirsty to help? Can Kirsty forgive him for his past mistakes? And who, if anyone, will survive the final showdown? Featuring extracts from Lucy’s secret memoir, Last of the Magpies brings the trilogy to a shocking conclusion.
At just over 100 pages this was a perfect read to finish off the day in bed with. As it is the final chapter in the story it makes sense to read the other two books first and so it really wouldn’t work as a standalone.
There is something pretty compelling about this series; caught up in the lives of two ordinary people whose whole world came tumbling down the day they became neighbours with Lucy Newton. Mark Edwards has a brilliant talent for making the ordinary somewhat extraordinary as well as terrifying.
In Last of the Magpies, we follow Jamie and Kirsty’s final quest to rid themselves of the psychopath who ruined their lives. Perfectly plotted and interspersed with chapters from the secret unpublished manuscript from Lucy, it was a chillingly satisfying conclusion to the story. I was, however, left with a desire to read all of Lucy’s manuscript, it would have made for a dark read that’s for sure!
Mark nails it again with his character portrayal and while as a novella it doesn’t give you the chance for too many suspects to be added to the mix, it is pretty easy to imagine yourselves in their shoes.
Full of the twists and turns that we have come to expect from this author, Last of the Magpies, is a cracking twisted tale and a perfectly executed ending to the series.
