I love the Gina Harte series from Carla Kovach and I bought this one at Christmas time.
Before I share my thoughts, here’s what the official blurb says:
Rory is waiting at the door of the pre-school – a painted picture of his mother Susan in his small hand. But Susan isn’t going to see the picture, because she has vanished.
Susan Wheeler is a devoted mother. She would do anything for her three children. She drops them off and picks them up every single day. Until one day when Susan kisses them goodbye and then never comes to pick them up.
Susan’s mother Mary is worried. Susan is recently divorced and has been finding things hard recently, but she loves her kids – she’d never leave them.
Susan’s sister Clare is furious. It’s just like her to go missing. It’s not the first time, either. Susan has always been a troublemaker. Always seeking attention. She knows Susan has been lying to the family for years. And she knows that Susan has been sneaking out of her family home for weeks…
As the hours turn into days, even Clare becomes fearful for Susan. And, when Mary discovers Susan’s diary, she begins to uncover a dark secret from her childhood. Something no one in the family knew. When the final diary entry leads the police to a man who is discovered dead in a local park, they’re left wondering whether Susan has vanished because she is a victim. Or because she is a suspect…
Oh my lord! Once again Carla Kovach blows my mind with another nail biting and action packed Detective Gina Harte installment! Right from page one I was gripped, infact before I even opened the book I was gripped…a devoted mother doesn’t turn up for her child at nursery…that blurb just screamed at me to read it!
Almost immediately I was drawn into the lives of Susan Wheeler and those connected with her. My spidey senses were tingling all the way through. I didn’t know who to like or even who I could trust. This lot had so many secrets crammed into their closets! I love this about a book, I love not knowing where to turn for someone to believe, I love all the little red herrings some giving you a bite while others leave you dangling. It definitely makes for a just one more chapter kind of read! And of course, I am not going to tell you who to trust…trust me, read it for yourself! It’s number five in the series but each of these books can be read as standalones.
In Gina Harte, the author has created a detective who engages me as a reader; she has her own traumas and secrets to deal with from her past and throughout the series she is slowly beginning to come to terms with these and the impact they have had on her relationships with others. The scenes in this book where Gina is at her mother’s graveside were so emotional, I felt so much for her and I wanted to reach into the pages and give her a massive hug. There are some hints that Gina may find some happiness and I truly hope she does but I do get the feeling life is not going to run too smoothly for her! There is something inherently likable about Gina, something that draws me as a reader into her character and into her head. Combined with some dark and edgy plots that leave you on the edge of your seat, this is a series I’d most definitely recommend you read!
