Yes, I know I am mega late to this party but I am enjoying my catch up with Liz Nugent’s books and Unravelling Oliver has been on my TBR for a while now.

Before I share my thoughts, here’s what the official blurb says:

I expected more of a reaction the first time I hit her.

Oliver Ryan, handsome, charismatic, and successful, has long been married to his devoted wife, Alice. Together they write and illustrate award-winning children’s books; their life together one of enviable privilege and ease—until, one evening after a delightful dinner, Oliver delivers a blow to Alice that renders her unconscious, and subsequently beats her into a coma.

In the aftermath of such an unthinkable event, as Alice hovers between life and death, the couple’s friends, neighbours, and acquaintances try to understand what could have driven Oliver to commit such a horrific act. As his story unfolds, layers are peeled away to reveal a life of shame, envy, deception, and masterful manipulation.

My thoughts

Oh my, I am feeling slightly unravelled myself as I have just lost myself in this book for the last day. Liz Nugent is an exquisite writer, she manages to squeeze every emotion possible into her books and in doing so she puts her readers through the emotional wringer.

I think I felt every emotion possible for Oliver as the story unfolded. Told from the point of view of a few characters, the story leading up to his assault on his wife is slowly revealed. Each character peels back another layer of the man who is Oliver Ryan and each chapter reveals the links between them all.

Unravelling Oliver is an intense study of character; I don’t think I’ve ever met a character quite as complex as Oliver Ryan; through his own story and the eyes of others, his background and upbringing are revealed. His views on his story are in stark contrast to the others who knew him. I felt conflicted at times as his story unfolded and the ending was sublime and ensured that the story and the man stayed in my head long after the last page was turned.

Liz Nugent has mastered the psychological suspense genre, her characters step out of the pages and into your head and the threads of the story seamlessly weave together leaving you drained at the end. Do not miss them!
