Alex Kane has grown from strength to strength in her writing and her latest novel, She Who Lies, is testament to this extraordinary journey she is on. I’m delighted to be sharing my thoughts on this novel on my blog today.
Before I share my thoughts, here’s what the official blurb says:
Blood is thicker than water, the family bond stronger than any other.
They think it’s all forgotten.
But I don’t forget.
The Laird-Shaw family live a life most only dream about. Self-made millionaires Gavin Shaw and Stevie Laird built their business from humble roots to global turnover, Stevie’s wife – and Gavin’s sister – Eva is never out of the style pages, while daughter Carla has used her huge following as an Instagram influencer to shine a spotlight on mental health issues.
But behind the glamour lies a web of lies; hidden secrets so explosive that they would bring this family dynasty crashing down. But someone out there knows the truth…and now they’re stepping out of the shadows to reveal the dark heart of the Laird-Shaw family. Because when the truth comes to light, there’s nowhere to hide…and all the money in the world can’t save this family from themselves.
Just what lies beneath the lives of the rich and famous? Is everything as “Insta-perfect” as the perfectly filtered pictures would have you believe? Well for the Shaw and Laird family it is most definitely not!
In She Who Lies, Alex Kane, lays bare the lies that are hidden, the secrets that are told and strips back a wealthy and seemingly untouchable family to their bare and extremely dark bones! I don’t want to say too much about the plot other than what you read in the official blurb above but what bloody downright manipulative and nasty characters some of these people really are.
Socially relevant, highly topical, this novel pokes and prods at the lives people create through social media, lives where the right clothes, being seen at the right places and having the right connections is all very important. The novel also plays homage to the #MeToo movement and highlights just how powerful people are able to make “problems” disappear.
The novel also explores dysfunctional families and when it comes to dysfunctional this family definitely tick every single box. Talk about toxic, the radioactive waves are almost jumping off the page as their secrets start to spill out. It’s like a poison has been fed into the family and it just seeps its way through the generations, some it misses but some it totally engulfs, but you will need to read the book to find out which ones are toxic and which ones escaped the family traits!
Loads of twisty twists and tremendous turns, it is a book I devoured in just one day. I was completely engrossed and caught up in the storyline and it is a book I’d happily recommend you to read!
