Holy Moley! What can I say! Well, read on and find out! But first of all…
Here’s what the official blurb says:
You’re a survivor, aren’t you, Matilda? But what’s the point in surviving when everyone around you is dead?
When DCI Matilda Darke receives a mysterious telephone call, she immediately dismisses the threat. Afterall the Homicide and Major Enquiries team are a regular target for prank calls.
But ignoring this warning might soon be the biggest regret of Matilda Darke’s life.
A lone gunman is on a deadly rampage around Sheffield, leaving a bloody trail in his wake. Taking his shots with a sickening precision, he’s about to leave his mark on the world and change Matilda and her team’s lives forever.
If you are a fan of the Matilda Darke series from Michael Wood and haven’t been hiding under a rock then you will be more than aware that something big is about to go down in the latest instalment and Lord, is that just the understatement of the year!
There’s nothing I can tell you about the plot that you can’t see on the blurb but what I will say is the shock and tension level is uber high in this one and Michael Wood ramps it up tighter and tighter as each page turns. This is one of those books that need to come with a “WTAF and forget any plans you might have had”, warning attached.
I love his writing style, it’s sharp and to the point without being bland, the words earn their place on the pages and have all the more impact for their directness. He squeezed every emotion out of me with this one as characters I’ve grown to love over the series faced a deadly situation that would impact on them for a long time. It’s so hard to write this review without giving anything away!
Michael Woods has taken the police procedural and turned it into a living, breathing world in this series. The characters are real, I can see myself walking through the buildings with the characters. And when there is a press conference taking place I half expect to turn on my TV and see it appear as headline news on my screen.
People often ask if there are any authors who you would pick up their books without reading the blurb, MW is one of them for me. I’ve eagerly awaited each of the books over the last six years and would happily read a book a month from this author.
This book broke me, it has had me crying in my car as I read, gave me palpitations and nightmares. It was probably the best bloody book I’ve read this year!
Do yourself a favour, go read it NOW!
