I’m delighted to be reviewing Good Girl from Mel Sherratt and thank you to the author and publisher for my review copy. I also purchased the kindle copy via Amazon.
Before I share my thoughts, here’s what the official blurb says:
When sixteen-year-old Erin Ellis is attacked, she dies in the arms of her best friend Molly, just metres from her home. Molly is the surviving girl but says she easily could have been the victim – it was a random mugging gone wrong.
With inconclusive evidence, DS Grace Allendale must dig deep within the tight-knit Stoke community for leads. And she soon finds that someone had a motive to kill Erin.
As the investigation unfolds, Grace is reminded of a horrifying case she worked on earlier in her career.
Is the past coming back to haunt her? And can she push through her fear to catch Erin’s killer before it’s too late?
Oh I LOVE Mel Sherratt’s books, did I ever tell you that? I absolutely love them! Her style of writing, the way she can draw me into whatever world she has created and make me feel as though I am a part of it is just outstanding and it is a skill that I would love to perfect as a writer, so I read her books to learn as much as to enjoy the story!
Good Girl is the latest in the detective series featuring DS Grace Allendale. It is no spoiler to tell you that a 16 year old girl dies in the opening pages and almost immediately I was drawn into the grief of family and friends as well as the investigation into her death. Starting off with that brutal premise Mel Sherratt takes us from present to past as the story slowly unfolds for the reader.
There is a real chilling undercurrent running through this book; as you become aware of what has been going on there is anger, sadness and a very real sense of why and a desire to see justice done. But don’t be fooled into thinking this leaves no twists or turns, there are plenty of these to keep you turning those pages long after you should be fast asleep.
With a real sense of place and characters so relatable you can imagine bumping into them when you leave your house, it was impossible not to find myself lost in this book devouring it over a weekend. Mel Sherratt is brilliant at digging under the surface and allowing her readers to find out about who her characters are, what makes them tick, their relationships, the good, the bad and the downright toxic ones. In doing so she brings them to life and ensures her readers become engaged in those lives, whether it is Grace Allendale, her dysfunctional family and her team or the vicitms, their families and the perpetrators.
A good solid police procedural with the added bonus of a cast of characters who earn a place in your heart and a feeling of being at the very heart of the storyline. Another winner from Mel Sherratt.

About the author
My novels take you to the heart of the crime. I write police procedurals, psychological suspense and crime dramas – fiction with a punch. Shortlisted for the prestigious CWA (Crime Writer’s Association) Dagger in Library Award, my inspiration comes from authors such as Martina Cole, Lisa Jewell, Mandasue Heller and Clare Mackintosh.
To date, I’ve sold 1.7 million books. All fifteen of my crime novels have been bestsellers, each one climbing into the Kindle UK top 10 and I’ve had several number ones. I’ve also had numerous Kindle All-star awards, for best read author and best titles.
My latest psychological thriller, INVISIBLE VICTIM is on preorder for 28th June 2021.
THE ESTATE SERIES is a mix of psychological suspense and family life with a sprinkling of grit and a dash of menace – where drama meets crime. There are four books, available individually or the first three as a box set.
THE LIES YOU TELL is a standalone psychological thriller, and my first novel set in London. I wanted to write about a character who was nice to everyone using one persona but out for revenge with another side to her that she tries to keep hidden away. The reader knows exactly what she is up to – but not the reason why.
WATCHING OVER YOU is another standalone psychological thriller. It’s dark in places, light in places, disturbing in places too – where obsession and friendship turn into murder. It will be published in May 2021.
The DETECTIVE ALLIE SHENTON SERIES starts with TAUNTING THE DEAD. It’s part police procedural/part psychological thriller. The next in the series, FOLLOW THE LEADER, will be published on 3 March 2021 and the third, ONLY THE BRAVE, will be published on7 April 2021.
My latest police procedural offering features DS Grace Allendale, HUSH HUSH being the first one, TICK TOCK the second, LIAR LIAR the third and the final one to finish the series, GOOD GIRL.
There are two books about DS EDEN BERRISFORD. She works in a community intelligence team and helps to gather information and intel for investigations. THE GIRLS NEXT DOOR is the first book, followed by DON’T LOOK BEHIND YOU. These books are based in the same setting as THE ESTATE SERIES.
I live in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, with my husband and terrier, Dexter (named after the TV serial killer) and make liberal use of my hometown as a backdrop for some of my books. You can find out more at my website http://www.melsherratt.co.uk or I’m on Twitter at @writermels
