I’d like to thank the publisher, Polygon, and the author for the ARC to read and review.
Once again I am delighted to bring you my thoughts on the latest DCI Daley novel from Denzil Myerick.
Before I share my thoughts, here’s what the official blurb says:
When a light aircraft crash-lands at Machrie airport, DCI Jim Daley and his colleague Brian Scott rush to the scene. But it soon becomes clear that both occupants of the plane were dead before take-off …
Meanwhile in Kinloch, local fisherman Hamish is unwittingly dragged into danger when he witnesses something he shouldn’t, and hotel manager Annie is beginning to suspect her new boss may not be as he first appeared.
And just as Chief Superintendent Carrie Symington thinks she has finally escaped the sins of her past, she finds herself caught in an even deadlier trap.
As the action spills across the sea to County Antrim – all under the scrutiny of the Security Service – the search is on for any other truth.
Anyone who has missed their trips to Scotland’s stunning landscapes over lockdown should do themselves a favour and pick up For Any Other Truth (or indeed any of the DCI Daley series) and find yourselves transported between the pages as once again he brings the fictional town of Kinloch, and its surrounding beauty alive.
Although this is the 9th in the series, it can be read as a standalone, as each book considers a new case. However, why would you pass up on the chance of reading a cracking series and the opportunity to delve into the dynamics of all the intricate relationships of each of the characters.
I always find it so difficult to review Denzil’s books without giving away any spoilers. There is so much I want to say and to tell you but don’t want to take away any of your enjoyment. I do think it is fair to say that Denzil Meyrick is a master storyteller; he has created a cast of characters who have grown on me over the series but he always adds in a little spice to the mix by throwing someone new into the pot and let’s just say they always add something to the flavour…and then some!
My favourite character, apart from Hamish, has got to be Brian Scott and boy is he a man who doesn’t have to go far to seek his troubles. Long serving sidekick of Daley, Brian has been promoted through the ranks of Police Scotland as the series progressed but success hasn’t brought him an easy ride. It’s no different in this novel as life conspires against him and his family once again. Yet despite everything, his wicked sense of humour and one liners combined with his spoonerisms guarantees he will always bring a smile to my face.
And Hamish, God love him, Denzil Meyrick well and truly stuck poor Hamish up a tree and poked him with sticks in this outing! I’m saying no more other than humour and a deep poignancy surrounds Hamish in this novel leaving readers on tenterhooks as he faces danger as he has never known before.
A complex but compelling plot keeps the reader firmly on their toes as they turn each page; it becomes almost impossible to put it down. This one wrung all the emotions from me, it had my jaw clattering off the floor a fair few times and a wee hankie dabbing at the eyes at others. Do yourself a favour and go buy this now!
