What can I say? Will Carver has once again proven himself to be the master of all things warped and twisted with his latest, Psychopaths Anonymous.

Before I share my thoughts, here’s what the official blurb says:

Maeve has everything. A high-powered job, a beautiful home, a string of uncomplicated one-night encounters. She’s also an addict: A functioning alcoholic with a dependence on sex and an insatiable appetite for killing men.

When she can’t find a support group to share her obsession, she creates her own. And Psychopaths Anonymous is born. Friends of Maeve.

Now in a serious relationship, Maeve wants to keep the group a secret. But not everyone in the group adheres to the rules, and when a reckless member raises suspicions with the police, Maeve’s drinking spirals out of control.

She needs to stop killing. She needs to close the group.

But Maeve can’t seem to quit the things that are bad for her, including her new man…

My Thoughts

Once again, Will Carver has left me absolutely speechless, what words can I even use to do justice to one of the most delightfully warped minds in the world of fiction!

If you like fluffy and cute; hearts and flowers and happily ever after, then turn away now because this book is NOT for you! If you are easily offended and don’t like murder, sex and scathing attacks on human nature then walk on by as this book is NOT for you!

But if you like warped, twisted and some of the most astute observations on modern day life alongside a cast of vile and totally unlikeable characters then settle yourself down as you are in for a treat.

Maeve is an addict; alcohol, sex and murder are her poison. She’s also slightly obsessive and scours the country attending support groups for addicts but Maeve is not looking for support, she is looking to tear apart the lives of those she meets.

God she is full of anger and hatred and Will Carver uses her character to relentlessly poke about systems, institutions, culture and most importantly, inside your mind. Full of astute observations on life, it will claw its way under your skin and stay there for a long time.

This book is insane, is it even crime fiction? I’ve no idea, it doesn’t seem to fit neatly into any kind of box, but then Will Carver has proved time and time again that there isn’t a box unique enough to contain him. I’ve said it before about his books and I’ll say it again about Psychopaths Anonymous, it is literary crack cocaine. Trust me, this is one writer you want to become addicted to!
